Don’t believe the hype!

I went to the bookstore yesterday and surveyed the latest issues of the top women’s health and fitness magazines. Here are just a few of the cover lines–the headlines appearing on the cover of the magazine:

  • Make over your body in one month – Shape
  • Flat Belly, Slim Thighs, Great Butt: They’re yours in one easy workout – Health
  • Melt 10 LBS Fast – Health
  • Drop Two Sizes in 8 Weeks! – Prevention Magazine brochure that came to my house 

On their cover, Fitness Magazine did not promise sleeker, slimmer, flatter body parts in 30 days, 6 weeks, 2 months or whatever–although go to their site and you can “Sign up now to lose 10 pounds in  January!” Geez. 

The plain truth is…You CANNOT promise a new anything–butt, thighs or abs–in a specific time frame when you don’t know the condition of the reader.

Certain things need to be considered, such as…

  • Whether she’s at 19% bodyfat or 39% bodyfat
  • Whether she’s 22 or 52
  • Whether she has any health conditions, such as hypothyroidism

A woman who’s already lean with a healthy metabolism may get that “great butt” with a few tweaks to her gym workout over the next 6 to 8 weeks.

But a woman who’s got 40 pounds to whittle off her frame won’t be seeing that “great butt” for a spell. She might shrink it a bit and firm it up, but…you get the point:

Things are never “easy” or “fast” when it comes to changing your body.

SHAME on you, women’s magazine editors!

These kinds of promises are particularly frustrating for women over 50. In many cases, our systems have slowed down considerably, if not actually SHUT down.

The plain truth is… it’s going to take some time. It’s going to take some work. It’s going to take consistency–with your diet and with your exercise routine.

These are NOT reasons to give up.

If anything, they are reasons to RELAX, enjoy the journey and accept healthy eating and regular exercise as permanent parts of your life.

Good things WILL happen. But NO ONE can promise WHEN.
